Should anything more be said? Well, apparently so since no one was available to troop this most worthy event only a few days beforehand. After the interest thread was bumped, I figured I'd better step up and volunteer. We had our own plans for Halloween, like most everyone else, but these kids needed to be cheered up big time. Still I didn't want to be the only one there so I asked if there was anyone else that could donate some time for these kids, and Charles thankfully said he would come.

The hospital planned a whole Halloween Festival with pumpkin decorating, face painting and trick-or-treating. Charles and I were set up as one of the trick-or-treat stations in the hospital lobby. We handed out stormtrooper trading cards and 501st temporary tatoos (no sugary treats allowed!)

And, of course, we posed for lots of pictures. It was a great day to see a smile on the face of a child who might not have had something to smile about for quite some time. It's these types of events that really bring it all into prespective as to why we are a part of the 501st. Sure the Conventions and Car Shows and whatnot are fun, but these kids have much mores serious issues to contend with. And it's up to us to put ourselves and our own plans aside and do what we can, when we can to brighten their days.

We have no photos from this event since it was only the 2 of us trooping.TB 2719http://www.blogger.com/profile/12029107607257771822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383198873033875246.post-75775470053697625202009-11-01T20:26:00.000-08:002010-01-11T07:46:53.223-08:00October 17, 2009 - Dog Day Afternoon<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxCT4cmFlOVEgPpbMWgTa1lC4Jgq4Mx95PuruzV_8EcUyDTAB0E4R4b-1TIUZDOqyziBFFOW2OiziUQiYC5bzBBWptLYn6luJuw9M2k-QsU17CCMC41zomXJ_Cs_wtyOYmrgCgwtrKzDY/s320/DSCF1462.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399361952339032210" />
We woke up to one of the coldest days I can remember here in Georgia. Cold, wet and rainy. And today's troops was going to be outdoors! We were off to Hard Labor Creek State Park in eastern Georgia for Dog Day Afternoon.

We signed up right away for this event when we heard about it. We are big animal lovers and any event where we could lend our support for the health and well being of animals is for us. It's was such a shame that the weather had to be so bad. Those dogs needed the donations and adoptions and the weather just kept most folks away.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaDjSGMybCK5FpTeMug_i3CuMCvjYimAJ8GpZxkgHdnXQRAycgRBwPpnkO864m6Cs0oqtEQneYgzct0J4zKEZAOhuTUNSL7FzrptU5lFfjTzzvVTYpo1kQ1fCf__n8u7AK3dD4M0IDMq8/s320/DSCF1458.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399361960742968898" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFLUh3XSi2uAQAjC2S5RL5S7B0Ro34ymVVYui_mtdve40EIBwff174J60Cvl_nXMJoD8kfnUpgt9ECUvuJXozARLPy3nq-LQNZ5ZwSZXyQTC_5ARiwKR8LqkQNSM2radhjiRppTRxO36Y/s320/DSCF1457.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399361966786995074" />
But, we did our best for the folks who did decide to brave the biting cold and rain. First up, we judged the musical sit competition, a doggie version of musical chairs. Then we had some great BBQ for lunch. After lunch it was time to judge the costume contest. First was the doggie Star Wars costume contest. There were 2 entries and they both were excellent. We had a Darth Vader and an Ewok. We had to give the prize to the Ewok since it was so creative. Then we judged the regular costumes and again we had 2 entries. An excellent cowboy costume complete with a little rider and a squirrel costume. They both we so great and again it was extremely tough to single one out over the other. But ultimately we gave it to the squirrel costume.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEd-tly_A-Q1aeyyL96nHZpBJLrsmUpycwuplpbGKT4-BjzKjIldfROpK9fsC5t10VbnBNYM-ZsLv91DG7mQToPodABWU37mogOaf_32aLoOg_tBWAd6Myb-d78vIOPiyGqkVIxZbJ6ME/s320/DSCF1459.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399361955890775682" />
Hopefully, if they have an event like this again, the weather will cooperate. Pottery Barn Kids has a line of Star Wars themed bed linens and room decor that is a retro throwback to the sheets we had as kids in the 70's.

The parents and kids were lined up outside the store before it opened while we were getting ready to greet them. We were set up in a nice big bedroom display and the groups of kids were brought in about 10 at a time to meet and take pictures with us.

Afterward, we did a little shopping and of course, we fought over which one of us got the top bunk!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL6i8h98R6aPBy7rrFABtj6um830JI_GlvHV2BfUwmKGHRMk0OVZhB5rAliPqFZ0D38XcUySclTcSp3VUyzdchTh6D4LvwDaY9RwKvicz2z4hTYDn5V_hULxi0ikBt3Jg0nodEMjIR_F0/s320/IMG_6609.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399357343414088818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFIAMtV43bE3o_du6AMCMMkbmdJdcZoSdj9Hee5OqPEB8ykMnD5UY9ZxCCffsTarpYFwTfpmEpsTYScdqeXAjH744wUf4wwO1z_jJTOm745BcqLS9QjPLzVUhPNYdLht7ZG-GhtEyc2Sg/s320/IMG_6611.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399357338394948098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEPDCsxs6gytxFBr1XWT3afGqaxxlUvieltdD6XYM5qXXIR5mti_icVjAwPy8ocRnrmBVgIFPHEklOplzil9zuhF__Fg3dlDtTuZqYWTmirn1w1k8ffP6LBWhFXx26D2Oanlfcd01_cUc/s320/IMG_6617.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399357337644135458" />
Thanks once again to PBK for having us. Saturday July 18th found us in Lawrenceville, GA for the Mason's Annual Car Show to raise money for Charity. Just like in the movies, they were planning on having an event where the museum exhibits come to life and interact with the guests and with each other. It was an awesome idea and everyone was clamoring to do it once the invite went out to us in the 501st Georgia Garrison to be a part of it all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieA1QcAW5DsrsvGuIhjqbT2C0rPyUmEjm7nn2RlDAipcdOE83OoadSzYAWEZ07Uncl9IMy0vYrFpDRUOx_M3kukLKwSfd0ogiWB8lmAPLHbeIJr5-T8VXLUKMtUhJGOrSWxpCNe3IMRIE/s320/HPIM3633.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360323626567618482" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrtLaG9nLh7M7OkP1K8QtWuN8K3wDDZMcEpxQWwAORBVWx2QCEHmAPU1Yo2KNITladDJ_IR4IgORTZI8wUR6q60BuiiuSmMDG95bU9oejSiGi46o3yDIbj_wDLLanqvcVfmWJRZb-w8pg/s320/HPIM3640.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360323616562678098" />
The premise was the museum had obtained a meteoroid from the Smithsonian which of course has an unusual effect on all of the exhibits. So I put the word out and we got a great response. Events like this are what's at the heart of the 501st and many were glad to take some time from their July fourth holiday to brighten the lives, even a little bit of foster kids. The Church sponsors 3 Foster Families and the picnic was for those foster children, along with the church member's children. All of the kids were very excited about the event!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYLiv9ugmUt5tEGQY5df-z_nbcLI1m_E4iGlCXcUTfWScGjamXYkQa3Kh8fT_kf1XtTnre0EZw0Q1ZSkfz7rA5bSCz0ftzG8S7W6iXo_4wRNjgiMrJFvgOOVRBWfFlcKMx45Azwk6mOoI/s320/july4th08.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360310710441598418" />
We were somehow blessed with spectacular weather! For a July afternoon in Georgia, it was quite cool with very low humidity. But there was some great shade to be had around the Church, too. We had Liz and I in our TIE and Scout, 2 Stormtroopers, 2 Jedi, and the big man, Darth Vader himself!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnMrCOaFc2W_oNQdOgv3k9xVwKwYlLctQJXU7PToV5h-VvL9pVk6AyV2_u-1McwEnYW8wD_jWyqDmigWPG18rrd16vLG8AzLuOohNyDGr6nkhG8Ry2RUGwSS5MZ85KpHTJvdv2fSuu3sY/s320/july4th01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360310705564531938" />
Everyone had a great time. I don't know. Hopefully she got a good grade for her project.TB 2719http://www.blogger.com/profile/12029107607257771822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383198873033875246.post-86262527781064448802009-05-24T08:08:00.000-07:002009-05-24T09:26:57.265-07:00April 18, 2009 - Borders Stonecrest "Outcast" Book Event<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoLjyj6mVB0vxs4RVT6Qv1VR0eRfUBMnkEBCidaJdRLWmyFQHxcZ8toci8dQ9FQog6m26vH14QApoVvV8kQaiuLnonyNSSlN0ZRR_UzbUyowLdp29Y7wVUk7xOnP6s8X_CUvj3FZBTXqI/s320/BordersStoncrest01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339420775908585074" />
The Borders Bookstore at Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia, GA requested an appearance to raise awareness for the newly released Star Wars book called "Fate of the Jedi: Outcast". Sadly this was a not a book signing event with the author Aaron Allston, one of my absolute favorite Star Wars authors. His Wraith Squadron books, part of the X-Wing series are superb and so much fun. He is an extremely funny writer and his books are what old school Star Wars is all about.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZg8_Vd9gBDvuuGZ6lpx2VDenFTTB4MLjt-YuIgGGIqspLUdQAhD3ICTQjylXJNPvoibxALuxqJmuPQwAI42NjZBC55JVo6aXpsJcayDWelb7qS1_9ZPkNNZNDmwzCQS260q8hIbNFT5I/s320/BordersStoncrest12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339420775334813282" />
Aaron recently suffered a massive heart attack on his current book tour and had to undergo quadrouple bypass surgery. I don't think I ever drove that far in that much rain before. I woke up this Saturday morning with a bit of a cough so I started on the Cold-EEZE and the Airborne. We've been working on getting the TIE costume together for a little while and this was the first time busting it out in public. So I brought my gear to downtown Atlanta on Saturday morning, August 30, suited up and joined the Parade.

We gathered at Woodruff Park at around 9 am, mingled and met with local Garrison mates and with folks from all over. The weather was real nice and clear. There were 12 Biker Scouts marching and we all kinda hung out together. 10 am rolled around and the parade started. We were lined up behind the TK's and in front of the Snowy's. The 501st always goes last so we finally rolled out close 10:30. And I couldn't believe the crowds and the cheers! It was amazing! We marched 2 by 2 down Peachtree Street waving and posing for photos.

It was nice because we were in shade between the high rise buildings for most of the route. But somewhere around the midde we were marching in the direct sun for a good 10 minutes. And I started to feel a little light-headed. Oh crap! I was going to be that guy! That guy on the news who passes out in the parade. Damn.... I don't want to be that guy. Well, all ended up being OK. We got back to the shade and we stayed in the shade for the rest of the march. The number I wanted was 2719. This was actually my first and only choice and the others I came up with were just back-ups if I couldn't get it.

I work as an Animator and animation history is important to me. Walt Disney and the great Disney animators like Ward Kimball, Freddie Moore, Milt Kahl, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston are heroes of mine. But Walt himself was a true visionary and it was his drive and determination that virtually created animation as a popular art form. I feel that I have the career that I have because of him. I doubt I will ever work for the Disney Studios, but Cartoon Network ain't half bad!

Anyway, 2719 Hyperion was the address for the original Disney Brothers Studios in Los Angeles, CA, the animation studio Walt and his brother Roy started fresh off the train from Kansas City, before Mickey Mouse was created. 2719 honors Walt at the start, before the fame and the popularity. It signifies the hard work and hard times building an industry and art form that I love.

TB 2719http://www.blogger.com/profile/12029107607257771822noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383198873033875246.post-17425366217179539282008-08-23T20:18:00.000-07:002008-08-24T07:58:07.225-07:00August 23, 2008 - Del Rey "Force Unleashed" Book ReleaseDel Rey Books requested the 501st to appear at bookstores around the country to celebrate the release of the "Force Unleashed" books based on the new video game. He's been working day and night for months determined to get it finshed by the premiere, and boy did he ever. He looked great! He's got lights and sounds and all kinds of cool working on that thing. Great job, buddy!
